Whip It directed by Drew Barrymore (2009), is a film about a teenage girl who discovers roller derby in a second hand boutique in Austin, Texas, then goes to a match, and falls in love with sport. She does everything she can to be the best she can be at the sport while trying to satisfy her mother’s beauty pageant ambitions for her. However, when she meets a young man, she nearly sacrifices her friendships and roller derby goals. The one true causality was her Slayer tshirt. While the acting was great and it looked fantastic, the story could have been a bit stronger by just dropping the romance portion of it and letting her have uncompromised drive for the sport. That would have been amazing to see. Overall, it’s one you have to watch.
